Lynn Terry has posted an article on her blog where she discusses “The Current State of Internet Marketing“.
Her discussion has to do with the present atmosphere of Internet Marketing and how it is changing.
While Lynn’s discussion is about Internet Marketing, in general, I am going to discuss one aspect of this subject which is email marketing and how most of the guru’s are doing it as well as how, I think, it should change.
I posted my views about email marketing & the issues I am dealing with when it comes to my email inbox being filled up with what I call “Legal SPAM” in my post called “eMail Marketers” are they “Internet Marketers” or are they “SPAMMERS“?
Don’t get me wrong… I am not against Internet Marketers nor their use of email marketing but I am questioning their marketing model, how they are using it, and expressing my opinion about how they should conduct their business endeavors for the good of the whole Internet Marketing world.

While I am not oblivious to the fact that  they are creating great wealth for themselves (which is what we all want to do), right now, by using this type of marketing, I agree with other marketers when they discuss the ways they think the Internet Marketing arena is changing, so I offer my 2¢ worth of what I think should change.
In my opinion it can’t change fast enough.  Â
While I have un-subscribed from most of the “gurus” emails I still need to eliminate a whole bunch more to get it down to a more manageable number.
Right now I am actually getting more illegal “SPAM” than I am legal “SPAM” which is better than it was but not good enough.
I get so tired of having all of these marketers (gurus) coming into my inbox waving their advertising banners in my face. I’d probly welcome all of them back in if they would start including some content with their promotions.
It makes me think of what it would be like if I went to a brick and mortar store, like maybe Wal-Mart(R), and as I am approaching the front door people come running up to me waving their fliers in my face wanting me to buy their stuff in addition to the stuff I am going into the store to buy in the first place.
This was/is some of the issues that made/make people hate popups when they visit web sites and it is, also, one of the main reasons for the development of “Popup Blockers” which made the Webmaster have to look for alternative “Popup” software to use to create popups for their sites that popup blockers can’t block.
This gave rise to several webmaster tools designed to create un-blockable popups like “You Can’t Stop This” and a few others. Seems like most webmasters learned something in all of this as you don’t get hit with so many popups any more when you visit web sites.
The fact is that Webmasters overused popups on their sites and angered people whom they were dependant on to create the wealth they wanted to extract from the market. In doing this they motivated the market to find a way to put the webmasters in check and stop them from slapping them in the face with all of their advertising all the time.
I suspect that something like this will be what causes these changes to come to pass in the world of email marketing.
We need to ask ourselves the right questions…
The fact of the matter is we need to ask ourselves the right questions about our marketing intentions, before we engage in eMail Marketing and Internet marketing in general.
Those questions should be centered around the golden rule which is:
Mat 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. KJV
A Jewish saying puts it another way and it goes something like this: That which would anger you do not do it to others.
- Question: Would the action I am about to take benefit me if I were the one this email is being sent to, if so Who does it benefit more, them (the receiver) or me?
Â
- Question: Am I just another “SPAMMER” if I send them 2, 3, 4 or more emails per day about my latest discoveries/promotions 3 to 7 days of the week?
Â
How about spending some time writing a high quality article or finding high quality articles from an article directory site like “Articles In Demand” on a subject that would help your list members learn something about some aspect of Internet Marketing, AND include your promotion(s) strategically located throughout your ezine/email/newsletter and, also, at the end of the mailing. That’s what marketers used to do and they were quite successful with it, too.
I’m sure you can think of a whole lot more questions than this so I will not continue here.

Quit telling me your sad stories!!!
I usually just delete these emails and sometimes I just go ahead and un-subscribe from them when I get one.
I get so many emails from so many gurus telling me about some bad thing that happened to them in their life and telling me I should feel sorry for their plight and buy their latest promotion because I feel sorry for them.
I am not heartless but I have my own problems to deal with which they never seek me out to find out about so why should I care about theirs.
Get up, dust your pants off and go back to work like I have to every time I have a bad day, week, month, year, life, etc.
I get others telling me about some argument they are having with another marketer about some subject that concerns their latest promotion or marketing model or something. I know they are trying to engage their audience but, again… WHO CARES!!! Teach me how to market and make some money!!!
No One Really Cares About Their Personal Problems
These marketers need to learn & understand that no one really cares about their personal problems or arguments with each other.
Sure they sell some of their stuff this way but anyone with any intelligence will eventually figure out that they are being duped into buying something, no matter how good the purchased item was/is, they could have done without. All because someone figured out how to use their emotions and sense of compassion, against them.
These types of promotions seem to come in waves like maybe a few of them have gotten together and agreed about who would have problems when they would have them and how often they should have them.
I think they sound like a bunch of cry babies, myself. People finaly get to where they don’t have any more compassion for someone who really is having problems simply because we can’t tell who’s being real with us and is really having problems and who is just trying to get our money.
Guru Style marketing Problems
Most of the problems, in my opinion, with the present “guru” style marketing is they are not teaching anything about Internet Marketing &, specifically, eMail Marketing, except by example.
Perhaps they didn’t/don’t intend to teach anything and they should be un-subscribed from, but most of the time the information was what they promised to us in the first place to get our email address, right?
I don’t make it a practice of subscribing to emails to be advertised to… I want to be taught something not get my wallet lifted/lightened.
I worked for a man once who, every summer, took European tours across Europe. This one year, while he was gone on his tour, a clerical error was perpetrated against one of our regular customer’s charge account and they would/could not get it fixed until the boss got back.
When he got back and the customer approached him about being over charged by about 3 times the normal value of his order he told Doyle ( the bosses name) “Doyle, I don’t mind paying for your yearly European Tours but I don’t want to pay for them all at once!” LOL
Likewise, a marketer’s list of subscribers don’t mind supporting their favorite marketer’s lifestyle but they want to get something in return.
The fact is, they are telling us nothing about a real, high value, marketing model except what we witness in their actions, thus the reason all of the other marketers are “SPAMMING” our inbox-es with their latest promotions.
What I mean by this is they are “SPAMMING” their promotions in our inbox-es with their never ending trail of emails promoting each others stuff or the latest gadget that will fill your inbox with loads of money but never filling those emails with valuable content meant to teach us anything about marketing.
When I open my inbox I find myself dreading it
When I open my email client and download my emails each morning I find myself dreading it as I know I will just be getting email after email of the latest “guru’s” suggested purchase they say are meant to help me in my marketing efforts but the email, itself, offers nothing in the area of teaching anything about Internet Marketing which, by the way, was the reason I signed up for most of their emails in the first place.
I enjoy seeing the emails I receive periodically from Lynn Terry and a few of the other high quality marketers because they offer something to me that makes me look forward to them. If these marketers send me an additional email or two a week telling me about a promotion, or even a few promotions, they want me to know about then, I suspect, I would open it with the same interest as I open their main informative email(s) with.
I have yet to receive an email from Lynn that I don’t learn something from but I can’t say that about most of the Internet Marketers I get emails from.
I take that back… I am learning something from these other “gurus” and that is how NOT to market if I want to be a true Internet Marketer and be considered a valuable asset to my list of subscribers. Yes Lynn Terry, I consider you a valuable asset to my marketing efforts!!!

Ethics seems to occupy a vague position with most of these guru marketers.
Sometimes I get some really good information about products that help me in my Internet Marketing Efforts but mostly I feel like their only interest in my email address is to sell me something and not teach me something of major value to my Internet Marketing efforts.
Perhaps someone need to produce a web site where Ethics is the subject, in general, and section it down into subcategories which deal with various marketing models and make “Ethical Internet Marketing” one of it’s main categories. That way we, guru & newbie alike, can all check to see if we are dealing with our subscribers by a high quality standard & so we can see if the marketers are running a high quality ethical business like they should be doing. Something like the BBB of Ethics, perhaps?
Right now marketers are only subject to what they think is right and what they think they can get away with.
I know this post is long but I hope you have got something out of it.
I love Internet marketing and I am looking forward to the future of Internet Marketing. As the Internet grows up we will all witness a lot more changes just as we have witnessed in the past and we are witnessing now and I say “Bring It On!!!”
As for me I will declare that if you decide to subscribe to any of my emails/newsletters I will always center them around the content but I am, also, going to put advertising and promotions in them as this is what I do, after all I am “Internet Marketer”… I am standing up!!!
